How to assemble FMS f-16 falcon 80mm edf jet

MS F-16 80mm EDF Assembly Guide (PNP version, factory pre-built EDF/motors/servos)

Important: Download the official PDF manual first from FMS website, follow it as primary reference. Required: 6S 22.2V LiPo (4000–5500mAh, 40C+, EC5 plug), 6+ channel 2.4G radio + receiver, LiPo charger.

Pre-assembly check

  1. Unpack all parts: fuselage, left/right main wings, horizontal stabilators, vertical fin, canopy, landing gear set, ordnance/missiles, screws, linkage parts.
  2. Inspect EDF fan blades, servos, retracts, wiring for damage; check all plugs are intact.
  3. Prepare tools: small Phillips screwdriver, tape, hobby knife, thread lock (blue, not red), hobby glue for scale parts.
  4. Keep battery disconnected during all assembly.

Step 1: Install horizontal stabilators (all-moving stabs)

  1. Route the two stabilator servo wires carefully through the fuselage tail cutout.
  2. Align each stabilator pivot pin into the fuselage mount.
  3. Connect servo extension plugs (marked L / R, do NOT cross).
  4. Secure stabilator mounting screws, use a tiny drop of blue threadlock.
  5. Manually test: both stabs swing freely without binding.

Step 2: Install vertical fin (rudder)

  1. Feed rudder servo wire through the fuselage.
  2. Seat vertical fin into the rear fuselage slot.
  3. Plug rudder servo connector to the internal harness.
  4. Fasten mounting screws; confirm rudder moves smoothly.

Step 3: Install main wings (most critical step)

  1. Slide the carbon wing spar tube fully into the fuselage spar socket.
  2. Bring left wing onto the spar; align wing root with fuselage.
  3. Plug the wing harness (aileron, flap, retract, gear door servos) into the fuselage matching plugs. FMS uses labeled plugs (Ail, Flap, Gear) to avoid mix-up.
  4. Push wing fully home, install wing root fixing screws from below.
  5. Repeat for the right wing.
  6. Tug lightly on both wings to confirm they are locked and connectors seated tight.

⚠️ If plugs are loose, flight power vibration can cut out controls.

Step 4: Landing gear & gear door check

The 80mm F-16 comes with electric retracts + sequenced gear doors:

  1. Power radio/receiver ONLY (no flight battery yet).
  2. Assign retract channel on your transmitter.
  3. Test: gear up → doors close; gear down → doors open. Adjust linkage if doors bind or catch gear legs.
  4. Check nose wheel steering works with rudder channel.

Step 5: Receiver installation & radio wiring

  1. Mount receiver inside the cockpit/bay, away from ESC/EDF power wires (to reduce interference).
  2. Route all servo harnesses to receiver:
    • Aileron (L/R)
    • Elevator / Stabilators
    • Rudder
    • Flaps
    • Retracts / Gear doors
  3. Bind receiver to your transmitter.
  4. Set all servos to neutral (center) on radio first before connecting pushrods.
  5. Check servo direction: reverse channels if aileron/elevator/rudder moves opposite to stick input.

Step 6: Control surface linkage & throw setup

  1. Check all ball linkages; snap links onto servo horns and control horns.
  2. Recommended throws (start low for first flight):
    • Aileron: ±12–15mm (low rate), ±20mm high rate
    • Stabilator (elevator): ±12–16mm
    • Rudder: ±18–22mm
    • Flaps: 25–30mm down for takeoff/landing
  3. Use sub-trim on radio to center every surface perfectly.
  4. Double-check nothing binds at full stick travel.

Step 7: Scale accessories (missiles, tanks, vents, canopy)

  1. Attach wingtip missiles, underwing fuel tanks / ordnance. Match left/right orientation; some just clip on, some need small CA glue.
  2. Fit the canopy; it usually latches or screws. Make sure it cannot pop off at high speed.

Step 8: CG (Center of Gravity – DO NOT SKIP)

FMS F-16 80mm official CG: 180–190mm back from wing leading edge at rootFMS Hobby

  1. Use a balancing stand or two fingers under the marked CG point.
  2. If nose heavy: move battery backward in battery tray.
  3. If tail heavy: move battery forward. Tail-heavy EDF jets are extremely dangerous and will snap roll / pitch up violently.
  4. Secure LiPo with heavy-duty Velcro + battery strap.

Step 9: Final ground test (SAFETY FIRST)

  1. Clear area, keep fan inlet/outlet away from hands, loose clothing.
  2. Transmitter ON first, then connect flight battery.
  3. Check all surfaces, flaps, retracts again.
  4. Advance throttle SLOWLY to idle, confirm EDF spins smoothly, no scraping fan noise.
  5. Full throttle brief test (1–2 seconds only): listen for vibration, no odd sounds. Cut throttle immediately.
  6. Disconnect battery, re-tighten any loose screws, recheck wiring routing so wires cannot get sucked into EDF.

Pre-flight checklist

✅ Radio battery charged ✅ Flight LiPo voltage checked ✅ CG confirmed ✅ Servo directions & throws correct ✅ Retracts + doors sequence properly ✅ All screws secured with blue threadlock on vibration points ✅ Fan free of debris

Common pitfalls on this jet

  • Crossed stabilator plugs → reversed elevator
  • Wing connectors not fully seated → in-flight aileron loss
  • Wrong CG (tail heavy)
  • Gear door timing out of sync → gear jams
  • Loose wires near EDF inlet → sucked into fan and destroys unit
