FMS F-4 Phantom II 80mm EDF PNP Assembly Guide

PNP version: EDF, motor, 100A ESC, all servos, metal retracts are pre-installed. You only need receiver, 6S radio, 6S LiPo and charger Required: Minimum 6-channel radio + receiver, 6S 22.2V 4000–5000mAh 45C LiPoFMS Model

Tools you need

  • Phillips screwdriver (M3)
  • Fine sandpaper (dry fit adjustment)
  • Tape / rubber bands
  • Thread locker (blue Loctite, optional for screws)
  • Digital scale + ruler for CG check

Step 1: Unpack & inventory

  1. Lay out all parts: fuselage, horizontal stabilizers (stabilators), vertical fin, main wings, missile/pod ordnance, nose cone, canopy, screws bag
  2. Inspect foam, EDF fan, retracts, servo wires for shipping damage
  3. Do NOT connect battery yet

Step 2: Install horizontal stabilators (all-moving tail)

  1. Slide left/right stabilator into the rear fuselage slots; note the built-in anhedral angle
  2. Route / connect stabilator servo plugs to the extension leads inside fuselage
  3. Secure with M3×10 screws; make sure both stabilators move freely and sit flush
  4. Check no binding when moving by hand

Step 3: Install vertical fin

  1. Plug the vertical fin servo cable to the fuselage internal harness (match pin direction carefully)
  2. Seat the vertical fin into the fuselage cutout
  3. Fasten with M3×16 and M3×20 screws as per manual; do not over-tighten foam threads

Step 4: Install main wings

  1. Insert the wing tube through the fuselage first
  2. Align left & right wings onto the wing tube
  3. Connect the wing servo/retract harness plugs between wing and fuselage (these carry aileron, flap, retract signals)
  4. Lock wings from below with M3×20 screws
  5. Tug gently to confirm wings are fully seated and connectors are locked

Step 5: Fit ordnance, nose cone & canopy

  1. Attach drop tanks and missiles to wing hardpoints: the high side of the mount faces wingtip; slide rearward to lock
  2. Install nose cone
  3. Clip the canopy into the cockpit latch

Step 6: Receiver wiring (critical)

This jet uses retracts, steering, flaps, aileron, elevator, rudder, throttle — 6 channels minimum Typical channel assignment:

  1. Throttle → ESC
  2. Aileron
  3. Elevator
  4. Rudder / nose steering
  5. Flaps
  6. Retracts
  7. Mount receiver inside the battery compartment, keep away from ESC/EDF power wires to reduce interference
  8. Plug all servo harnesses into receiver per your radio channel map
  9. Bind receiver to your transmitter now

Step 7: Pre-power control test (SAFETY FIRST)

  1. Turn transmitter ON first
  2. Plug in the 6S battery only after radio is on
  3. Center all sticks, set trims to zero
  4. Test every surface from behind the jet:
    • Aileron: Right stick right → right aileron up, left down
    • Elevator: Pull back → stabilators pitch up
    • Rudder: Left stick left → nose left
    • Retract switch: Cycle gear up/down, check no binding
    • Flap switch: Confirm flap travel
  5. Reverse channels in your radio if direction is wrong
  6. Disconnect battery after testing

Step 8: CG (Center of Gravity) check — DO NOT SKIP

  • Use the CG mark printed on the fuselage (follow FMS manual dimension)
  • Support the plane at CG point; it should hang slightly nose-down or level
  • Adjust battery forward/back inside the battery tray to tune CG
  • Too far forward: heavy nose, hard to flare; too far back: unstable, easy to snap roll

Step 9: Final ground check before flight

  1. Check all screws again, especially wing, tail and retract mounting
  2. Check EDF: give short throttle blips (keep clear of fan!) to confirm smooth spin, no rubbing
  3. Double-check retract operation, gear doors open/close cleanly
  4. Set dual rates: low rate 70% for first flights, high rate 100%
  5. Secure battery with strap; no loose wires near the EDF intake

Important safety notes

  • Always turn radio ON → connect battery; disconnect battery → turn radio OFF
  • Keep fingers and objects away from the 80mm fan when powered
  • This is a fast 6S EDF jet; only fly on a proper paved runway
  • Blue Loctite only on metal-to-metal screws; never on foam
